Map of PROPOSED Fish Farm Sites (The Northcoast is still fishfarm free!)
design: Daniel Jordi
Key and Notes for this map:
#1: Anger Island was the 1st site approved by DFO and BC in July 2004, but as of April 2007 it is not built. THREE SITE APPROVALS MAKE BUILDING ECONOMIC BUT SO FAR THERE ARE ONLY TWO!
#2: Petrel Point was the 2nd site approved by DFO and BC in Feb'05, but as of April 2007 it is not built.
#3: Strouts Point is the 3rd site approved by DFO but BC is still HOLDING BACK THE LICENSE as of April 2007. THE LIBERALS DECISION ON THIS THIRD LICENSE IS STILL PENDING!.
- 30% of the Skeena River flows through the Ogden Channel to Beaver and Petrel Channels where many of the proposed farms are sited.
- There are currently NO fish farms near the Skeena or anywhere in the north coast of B.C.
- The Skeena River has Canada's second-largest commercial salmon run-millions of salmon-more wild salmon than the entire Atlantic Ocean
- These 18 proposed fish farm sites would be located in the Skeena's southern out migration route.
- There is scientific evidence that Sea Lice from fish farms can kill migrating salmon smolts. |
